This film is part of a four-part series about World Bank's Read@Home program to improve literacy levels and address learning poverty. Too many children have little or no experience reading at home; limiting their language development and pre-reading skills and making the transition to school-based reading instruction very challenging. Encouraging quality interactions with parents and caregivers at home is essential to improve children’s development and learning outcomes. This film asks caregivers to encourage their children to reflect when they finish reading the story; what they have learned and what they have liked. For many people fleeing persecution and conflict, family reunification is often the only way to see loved ones again. This safe, legal pathway brings family members back together, but all too often complex processes get in the way. The Reunification Pathways for Integration (REPAIR) project’s goal is to improve refugee family reunion by helping separated families to reunite in Europe before, during and after they arrive. This three-year project has been led by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Working in partnership with the Austrian, British, French and Slovenian Red Cross, and with support of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Together, we are scaling up our support by offering a range of services. These include counselling, visa application support, socio-cultural orientation sessions, psychosocial support, and language classes. REPAIR is co-funded by the European Union’s Asylum, Migration, and Integration Fund (AMIF). High-quality and stimulating early learning experiences can address gaps in foundational skills to level the playing field for children with fewer opportunities. While access to early childhood education has grown dramatically over the past decade, many children still do not have access to services or are enrolled in places that lack the quality to unlock their potential. But actionable and evidence-based strategies are available to deliver quality early learning at scale. The World Bank's volume: "Quality Early Learning: Nurturing Children's Potential" brings together experts in the field of early learning to share the evidence on key elements of quality early childhood education. The World Bank’s focus on foundational skills requires that issues of language and Language of Instruction (LOI) be brought to the forefront of education policy discussions. Poor LOI policies harm learning, access, equity, cost-effectiveness, and inclusion. Yet nearly 37% of students in low- and middle-income countries are taught in a language they do not understand. Massive learning improvements are feasible by teaching in a small number of additional languages. The World Bank’s first Policy Approach Paper on LOI offers an indication of the work that will be undertaken to support countries in introducing reforms that will result in more resilient, equitable, and effective systems by promoting teaching in the languages that students and teachers speak and understand best.
