Mate Helping Mate Podcast

Mate Helping Mate is a podcast focused on mental health and mateship in the Australian bush.

Hosted by  John Harper, we hear from farmers, locals and health workers about what works (and what doesn’t) for helping people struggling in remote and rural communities. Featuring great yarns, big hearted guests and the distinct flavours of the bush – it’s a must listen for anyone outside of the big smoke.

This Podcast series was the initiative Room3 and John, now in its 4th season with funding and support from The Department of Primary Industries NSW.

"Exceptional Listening.

What an amazing, inspirational podcast. Every single person who shared their mental health stories with us are so very special, strong & exceptional members of rural remote Australia. Thankyou for your honesty, tears , laughter & strength- wow what amazing truths you were able to share with us- it was like listening to dear heartfelt friends over a cuppa❤️. It’s so comforting to know we aren’t alone in our regions, each and everyone of us does, may struggle with mental health issues or know of someone who may be struggling. It was lovely to know everyone out here in the Bush shares a similar story.

Thankyou so much & keep up the positive work you’re doing."

“This Podcast is an awesome resource for rural communities and I congratulate John and his team for doing such a professional job. I think we have to keep up with technology and social media and need to use whatever medium possible to get the message out there. It’s so important to be able to communicate with people no matter where they are and Podcasts are obviously a popular medium that is targeting people who might not have the courage to ask for help, but need support and this offers the privacy to do that.”

“I feel Podcasts such as this are a vital link to people who are living with mental illness and just as importantly, to their support network and community. Hearing real-life stories from people who live and work in our communities as well as the carers of these amazing people can give the listeners insight as to how people with mental health issues manage their lives, the positive impacts and challenges of everyday life for all involved."

"The amazing team at Room 3 worked with us on our podcast and they were amazing!

The process was a delight working with professionals who not only know the technical stuff, but also know about aid and development, and get the nuances around what's important. The patience and attention to detail was fantastic and we look forward to our next project together!"
