A short film celebrating the creative economy for inclusive economic development. For thousands of years, bilum weaving has been handed down from mothers to daughters across Papua New Guinea (PNG). It is an integral part of PNG’s cultural heritage and an important source of income for artisan women, especially those facing significant social and economic disadvantage. Yet despite bilum’s omniscient presence in PNG, its commercial and artistic value has remained relatively hidden, until recently. This film celebrates the incredible PNG women social entrepreneurs who over 10 years ago began to shine a spotlight on bilum as a national treasure, whilst driving inclusive economic growth for women weavers. It shows just what is possible when emerging entrepreneurs have effective access to international markets, support to strengthen their supply chains and are empowered to share their creativity and culture with the world. The Pacific region, home to over two million people across numerous island nations, faces a critical challenge: climate change - which is making communities and infrastructure more vulnerable. So how do you build essential public infrastructure - like roads, bridges and ports - knowing they'll face recurring natural disasters like cyclones and floods, exacerbated by climate change? Adapting isn't just about survival; it's about thriving despite these challenges. For the people of ‘Eua island, in the east of Tonga, the island’s wharf is a lifeline; their connection to the rest of the country, and world. When the port was hit by repeated cyclones and king tides in 2021, and then by destroyed by a massive tsunami in January 2022, small businesses like the one owned by local Aloinea Havea suffered greatly, unable to receive new stock. A World Bank project has led the restoration of the wharf on ‘Eua, helping the island’s community to recover swiftly. Maya Cares is an online chatbot that was established by Priyanka Ashraf as a means to support women who experience racism, in real-time when it happens. Through the Australian Red Cross - Humanitech Pilot Program, Maya Cares was was granted the opportunity to access grant funding, mentorship, network development and support. This film explores this partnership and how it has enabled Maya Cares to advance further in benefitting people and communities. Humanitech convenes with partners across sectors to create insights into the humanitarian impact of technology, test and amplify innovative approaches to technological design, and influence for safe, equitable and inclusive uses of data and technology. In 2022, one of the largest volcanic eruptions ever recorded triggered a tsunami that devastated communities and infrastructure throughout the Kingdom of Tonga. ‘Eua island, a small island in Tonga’s east, lost the full use of its vital port following the disaster, leaving communities and businesses struggling. Now, work is underway through a World Bank program to upgrade infrastructure like roads, ports and the airport to help Tongans get back to their normal lives with confidence.
